We understand many of our entrepreneurs want to offer products to address the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and we have created these guidelines using published guidance from the federal government and other agencies on what campaigns can offer for perks that might fall under these guidelines. Please check this article periodically as we will be updating it as additional guidance is provided. Read on below for more information!
What can I not offer as a perk in this category?
You cannot offer a product or its equivalent (i.e. a voucher, discount, etc.) that has any mention or claims relating to these keywords:
- Viruses (including COVID-19 or colloquial references to it) viral or antiviral,
- Disinfecting or disinfectant,
- Sanitization, and
- Disease, Illness or a similar word
You also cannot offer anything on a federal, state or local department list of prohibited items as a perk, including the below items as they relate to the above mentioned key words:
- This list from the Food and Drug Administration, including herbal teas, essential oils, cannabidiol related or derived products,
- This list from the Department of Justice including “immunity” pills, counterfeit protective equipment,
- This list from the Federal Trade Commission, including immune-boosting IV drops, vitamin C supplements, and facial brushes
Can I still offer a perk that complies with the above guidelines?
Yes. For example, products like masks are allowed, but you cannot make any claims related to the above keywords, including about their efficacy (i.e. making claims a product can kill “99.99% of bacteria, virus etc.”) or ability to protect against, sanitize, disinfect, etc. against the above key words and categories.
What if my campaign has already launched with a perk that is not allowed?
Our Trust & Safety team is periodically reviewing our platform for campaigns that fall into these guidelines. If your campaign falls into these guidelines, we will review it to see what the purpose of those perks and your campaign is. We may take actions including, but not limited to, reaching out to you to request you remove any mention of these keywords and categories or suspending your campaign and refunding perks. Our team’s determination of whether a perk or campaign violates these guidelines is solely within Indiegogo’s discretion and is final.
Are all mentions of COVID-19 prohibited?
We also understand that many campaigns have been impacted by COVID-19 related delays and encourage you to keep updating your backers on the status of your campaign. These types of updates related to COVID-19 production and shipping delays also do not fall under these guidelines.
If you aren’t sure whether these guidelines will apply to a campaign, please reach out to us here before launching your campaign.
